Senior Mechanical Engineer
Do you want to turn breakthrough tech into real products? Join Photoncycle at a pivotal moment combining hands-on ownership, strong investor backing, and real impact on the energy systems.
Would you enjoy the benefits of being part of a close knit, growing and international company and a strong network, all while working on groundbreaking and impactful technology?
Photoncycle is financed by venture capital, with Lifeline Ventures, one of the leading early-stage investors in the Nordics, as the largest external owner. As a part of our growth plans, we are now looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer. In this position you will be a key player in shaping the future of renewable energy. We are now transitioning from R&D and conceptual work into detailed design, pilot builds and product industrialisation. This is a rare opportunity to join a well-funded climate tech company at the point where strong, practical mechanical engineering turns deep tech into a manufacturable product.
The role
In this position you will take ownership of the mechanical design and realisation of core subsystems in a complex, multidisciplinary product. This includes thermal management, compact packaging, piping/tubing, assemblies, component selection, and pilot implementation, bridging chemical, thermal, electrical and manufacturing requirements.
This is a hands-on product development role: you will not only design, but also prototype, test, iterate, and help the team establish robust methods, tools, and component strategies that shorten iteration cycles and improve manufacturability.
Key responsibilities
Mechanical architecture & detailed design
Drive mechanical design from concept through detailed design, prototyping, and pilot build implementation.
Visualise, model and refine designs at both component and assembly level (3D CAD).
Own “nuts-and-bolts” mechanical engineering decisions: tolerances, interfaces, assembly strategy, serviceability, and robustness.
Compact multidisciplinary packaging
Solve non-trivial packaging challenges, routing and integrating mechanical assemblies with chemical routing/tubing, thermal insulation needs, electrical harnessing and connectors, and safe maintainable layouts.
Thermal & mechanical integrity
Contribute to thermal management and insulation strategies for systems that cycle between hot and ambient conditions.
Perform and/or interpret engineering calculations and FEA where relevant (with specialist consultant support as needed).
Other:
Specify and select components such as valves, piping/tubing, fittings, connectors, electrical connectors/harness interfaces, clips, brackets and fasteners
Collaborate with external partners/consultants in the detailed design/industrialisation phase (including Ricardo) and translate requirements into implementable designs
Help introduce pragmatic tools, methods, and “use existing proven approaches where possible” to reduce time spent building everything from scratch
Who are we looking for?
With a BSc/MSc in Mechanical Engineering or similar, you have 5 years+ experience from Mechanical Engineering and product development. You have strong 3D CAD capability, and you have a practical “all-rounder” mindset and strong problem-solving skills.
Key things we look for:
Proven hands-on ability: taking designs from idea → prototype → tested implementation in a lab/pilot environment.
Comfortable with fabrication methods and complex assemblies (welding/machining/casting oversight, assembly thinking).
Experience with FEA and engineering analysis (emphasis on interpretation and decision-making; simulation support can be provided by specialists).
Ideally experience with one or more of: compact process systems, thermal systems/insulation, pressure systems, hydrogen-related systems, HVAC/powertrain thermal management, industrial equipment packaging, or high-reliability electro-mechanical products.
Experience moving products from prototype to low-/mid-volume production.
Familiarity with regulated or safety-critical engineering environments and documentation discipline.
What can we offer?
We hope that you find our journey ahead as exciting as we do. We have invested significantly in our technology, and you will now be an integral part of securing state-of-the-art quality to our products. Your work and your impact will be central to the company's future success and growth.
At Photoncycle, you can expect favourable conditions, and an exceptional opportunity for your professional journey that include:
A key role in building a novel residential energy system with solid-state hydrogen seasonal storage and real-world impact.
Significant responsibility and autonomy, with the chance to grow into technical leadership as the team expands
Oslo-based deep-tech environment at Oslo Science Park, working closely with a multidisciplinary team.
Dynamic environment with strong investor backing
High levels of autonomy in a science-oriented workplace that fosters collaboration and innovation
Company share-option scheme
Competitive salary and bonus
