Technology Developer (Control Systems)
Do you want to turn theories into real-world climate impact? Join Photoncycle to build embedded control systems powering autonomous household energy units.
Photoncycle is reimagining the energy landscape by delivering energy as a service. Our mission is to build, install, own, and operate a fleet of distributed energy storage systems and the digital infrastructure required to function as an aggregator under the EU Clean Energy Package 4 and Directive 2019/944. We empower prosumers and local energy communities by enabling flexible, decentralized participation in energy markets. Photoncycle is financed by venture capital, with Lifeline Ventures, one of the leading early-stage investors in the Nordics, as the largest external owner.
The Role
We are seeking a Technology Developer to play a key role in the development of Control Systems for the Energy Management Platform of our household energy units. These systems translate dispatch schedules from our Optimization Engine into real-time control signals for the various subsystems — including battery, thermal, and chemical storage — ensuring safe, efficient, and adaptive operation under uncertainty.
This role will work closely with the developer responsible for the Data Analytics and Optimization Engine, forming a core part of our Software Development team.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and implement the embedded control system that governs real-time operation of the household energy unit.
• Support specialists from other engineering disciplines to design, document, and test control strategies for the household energy unit using a model-based development approach.
• Implement Model Predictive Control (MPC) and rolling horizon planning strategies to anticipate and adapt to changing conditions (e.g., weather, solar PV output, user behavior).
• Translate high-level dispatch schedules into actionable setpoints for subsystems, balancing energy efficiency, safety, and user comfort.
• Implement control process control sequences using state machines for deployment on real-time embedded systems.
• Implement Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment (CI/CD) practices for the Energy Management Platform.
• Conduct Verification and Validation of requirements using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) to ensure robust and reliable system behavior.
• Collaborate with a cross-functional software development team to integrate the control systems with the broader energy platform and fleet management system.
Qualifications
• Strong background in control systems engineering, with a focus on embedded systems and real-time control. Hands-on experience with implementation of Model Predictive Control (MPC) in uncertain environments is a strong plus.
• Hands-on experience with embedded systems software development, verification, and validation in C# and C++ using ARM-based processors. Experience with PLCs and IEC 61131-3-based programming is considered a plus.
• Proficiency in model-based control design leveraging tools such as Matlab, Amesim, and DWSIM. Experience with Functional Mockup Units (FMUs) is a strong differentiator.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for embedded software is a strong plus.
• Knowledge of energy systems, thermal/electrical storage, or household energy applications is desirable.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment.
What We Offer
We hope that you find our journey ahead as exciting as we do. We have invested significantly in our technology, and you will now be an integral part of securing state-of-the-art quality to our products. Your work and your impact will be central to the company's future success and growth.
At Photoncycle, you can expect favourable conditions, and an exceptional opportunity for your professional journey that include:
• A chance to shape the future of decentralized energy systems.
• Work on cutting-edge technology with real-world climate impact.
• A collaborative, mission-driven team culture.
• A centrally located office in Forskningsparken with excellent infrastructure and amenities (wardrobe with showers, bike parking and wash, gym, free beer on Fridays, sport groups, social gatherings).
• A flexible work culture that encourages in-person collaboration, with one designated focus day per week for remote work.
